Classroom Curricula
At P.S. 89, we implement research-based curricula to support and enhance student learning across all subject areas.

Wit & Wisdom is the ELA curriculum for Grades K-5. It is designed to develop and strengthen students’ reading, writing and communication skills.

PAF is the school’s foundational literacy program for Grades K-2

Heggerty is the phonemic awareness program for grades K-2.

Students from kindergarten through grade 3 participate in structured handwriting programs designed to support the development of foundational handwriting skills.
- Students in kindergarten and grade 1 use the PAF Handwriting Wizard program.
- Students in grade 2 use the Powerful Printing program.
- Students in grade 3 use the D’Nealian Handwriting program to learn cursive.

TERC Investigations is the school’s core math curriculum.

Students in grades 3-5 follow the Passport to Social Studies curriculum. Students in PreK-Grade 2 receive interdisciplinary instruction with social studies concepts woven into their ELA curriculum.

Students in grades K-5 receive science instruction following the Amplify Science curriculum. Students in grades K-4 receive 1 period of science instruction in the science lab. Students in grade 5 receive 2 periods of science instruction and complete science investigations prior to taking the New York State science examn in the spring.
